The strength of the aesthetic rendering of the painting lies not only in the proud attitude of the girl with a parta from Važec, which symbolizes the determination and strength of the Slovak women, but also in the composition of the painting and the use of strong geometric ornaments. In composing the portrait, the photographers were inspired by the almost century-old work The Bride from Važec by Ján Hála, and with their modern optics they seek to both build on and pay tribute to his life’s work. We should also mention the colourfulness of the painting – the combination of the three Slavic colours, which was an important attribute of the pictorial composition. The painter sought her inspiration in a characteristic element of the bridal attire of the bride and groom – ‘pôlka’, a woven canvas dominated by the colour red as a protection against harmful forces. The polka dot was a decoration of the bride’s head, a symbol of purity and beauty. It was made by only a few skilled women who drew inspiration from the nature of the Tatra foothills. The front part of the parta is lined with a band of flowers and green leaves, tiny pine cones, complemented with glass beads of different sizes and shapes, symbolizing a flowering meadow with glistening dewdrops. The party includes seven square mirrors, representing each day of the week. The top of the parta is decorated with white broomsticks, resembling the tails of songbirds. Parta in the painting dates back to the second half of the 20th century and belongs to the heritage of the folklore association Stráne Važec.

The delicacy and fragility of the model in the painting is complemented by the plant ornament, especially the motif of tulip, rose and branches in the colours of clothing typical for the Lower Pohronie region – white and red. In the magical-poverty imagination, red was seen as a protection of the bride from evil influences. The symbol of a tulip in the shape of a cup-shaped flower with three petals was taken from embroidered women’s boots. The archaic, geometric motif of a rosette with a star in the centre is also richly represented in the background of the painting. The wreath is referred to in the village as ‘tornyos koszorú’ which translates as a wreath as tall as a church tower. It consisted of a number of wax buds, flowers, glass beads, nylon flowers and a gathered, white veil reaching to the waist of the bride, which had a significant contribution to the inclusion of this wedding wreath in the project. The wreath in the picture was made in Štúrovo in the 1950s. Wreaths were not borrowed in the village, each bride was provided with a new one. The last wedding where the bride was married in her wedding attire with a wreath on her head took place in the late 1960s. Three original wedding wreaths from the first half of the 20th century have survived in the village.

ZÁRIEČIE

Happiness, health and love, which were to accompany the young bride on her journey through life, were put into the painting by the artists through the stars. The ‘stars’, based on a decorative embroidered bunting, evoke the well-known works of Takashi Murakami – the founder of the superflat style, but the geometric motif dates from the beginning of the last century. The model’s face is adorned with the symbols of a spider – “klješčáre” and  “hrebíček”, which emerge from the “furma” of the central band on the sleeve cuffs. The painting of Záriečie, as well as the embroidery of Záriečie, is characterised by the variation of the patterns of the individual motifs, which are a painterly original design . The parta in the painting consists of two parts, the lower part is made of a circular band, covered with black cloth and decorated with sewn braids, ‘bortne’ made of sequins and also silver and gold narrow ‘sujtášká’, which created motifs of flowers, petals, strips and waves. The main motif on this section was a 4 or 6 petal flower. The side decoration mostly included motifs in the form of ears, strips, waves and figure eights with small decorations. The back was decorated with embroidered ribbons of one length. The top part of the party wreath consists of an arc of five small cockades (mica) in the shape of a semi-arc. The party in the picture dates from the 1950s.

Highly coloured painting, based on slightly pink and blue tail and sewing with tiny wax flowers is suppose to evocates youth, sensitivity and gratefulness felt by young bride on her depart from parental house. On humble model’s face can be seen decoration pat- tern based on husband’s needlework. „Parta“ on this painting is dating back to 1938 and was restored by Dávid Hudec. Main part was composed of wreaths, rosemary in circular shape and embroided ribbon hanged on rear of head reaching down to bottom edge of skirt added up with reflective metal spangles so bride while in move will deflect “bad omens” from sun’s shine on her way to wedding. Wreaths on „Parta“ of Kozárovce used to be made by wives of miners from village of Pukanec. First historical mentioning of this „Parta“ came from archaic songs of early 19. century.

Peacocks feather on painting represents wealthy tradition of peacock breeding in Stará Pazova, where they used to say “where one finds peacock, there lives a proud man” so in sense of this saying bride was also supposed to be proud on her wedding day. Blue colour was typical for folk of Pazova. Star shaped geometrical ornaments were taken from part of men typical wristband called “zápästky”. „Parta“ is of two parts wheel and wreath. Wheel used to be made by tying wide floral pattern ribbons of various colours on brides pigtail on these ribbons were placed fresh green leaves in shape of small wreath ended up with circular golden leaf. Wreath based on two smaller wreaths which were composed of tiny blue colours joined with pink ones. In middle of „Parta“ was one bigger flower decorated with pearls and golden tinsel. Under the wreath was golden leaf on which were tied tiny pink or blue ribbons. Tradition of using „Parta“ in Stará Pazova survived till modern days.

Black colour of painting is based on wedding dress and represents a sadness for lea- ving family and her freedom. Old patterns which dominates whole painting were taken from needlework on man traditional clothes. After 2. world war floral patterns begins to appear. Wreath used to be worn firstly on last wedding proposals in church while they wear colourful folk dress and on wedding day bride was wearing a black folk dress. Traditional wedding wreath used to be composed of various parts. Bigger wreath was placed on head and tied to brides pigtails while smaller wreath decorated with green leaves was tied to brides chest right under beads. Under this wreath was placed scarf called “čakňáš” on which was pinned rosemary as symbol of virginity. Pigtail as symbol of maiden used to be covered with red sewed ribbons and on those usually pinned small wreath. On side of red ribbons were also pinned two small leaves with other ribbons called “obodze” which were crossed with another ribbon on bottom.

Golden circle around „Parta“ depicts “zlatník” coin held by bride on wedding which was suppose to bring prosperity and happiness into new family. Models expression evocates nostalgia for early life and acceptance of change in her ́s life and herself from now belongs to other family. Wreath of Pivnica used to be worn first time on second marriage proposals. Wreath maker was called “vencárka” (fem.). Not every bride has her own wreath usually only the rich ones, poorer brides usually use rented. 
On wreath were dominating roses of white cloth every each of them decorated with glass pearl stacked in 4 rows. Wreath used to be added with tiny mirrors, green leaves and small colourful flowers at the top of wreath used to be silver tinsel.
Bride used to worn black wedding dress same as her bridesmaids it used to depict sorrow of her hearth for leaving a family and her freedom behind. „Parta“ on this painting dates back to late 50. of last century.

Painter used a golden colour of traditional brides bonnet given to her by mother in law. Golden colour represents prosperity and wealth. Floral patterns on painting were taken from brides traditional belongings which she used to bring to the new family. Wedding “venčok” as wreath used to be called in Aradáč, was used only by bride on wedding, bridesmaid used to have pigtails at the end tied up with white ribbons. As rule says that colour of brides dress has to be white only on death in family occasion she was wearing a black dress. “Venčok” is composed of tiny wax flowers mostly in shape of roses and white sprouts joined with rosemary. Brides used to give it to another bride in family on another wedding occasion. Hairstyle of young bride has its base in thick pigtail added up with two white ribbons. Wreath on painting is dating back to first half of 20. century. If young bride died before her wedding, the burial used to have all attributes of wedding and she was buried in her white dress also with wreath on her head. In village of Aradáč are still more than 20 of these traditional wreaths. First Slovaks in region of Aradáč came from Novohrad, Piešťany and Zvolen regions.
