ABOUT PARTA
Wearing “party” in the village Valaliky in eastern Slovakia is documented on wedding photos from the late 19th century, however, they could have been worn also before. “Parta” was worn by a bride to be on her wedding day; it was spectacular and richly decorated. Girls on first communion, confirmation, religious occasions wore smaller white garlands. As a symbol of protection they used green rosemary wreath pinned with a goose feather, which was clipped on a bride’s head. One interesting tradition in Valaliky was that wedding “party” could not be lent or given to another person in the village, because the marriage would be unfortunate. According to a local tradition, “party” have been associated with magical superstition, so they had to be burned in a sacred fire. In the 60s of the 20th century, “parta” was gradually replaced by tiara with veil called “šlajer”. This “parta” was lent to us by Mr. Pavol Kacvinský.
